If you don’t want to watch the video, I paraphrased it in the rest of the post:
I’ve been waiting for almost a week to tell you that… I was accepted to the 2012 Clarion West Writers Workshop! My friends are going, “WHY DIDN’T YOU TELL ME, JACKASS” and the short answer is: because you would have asked me about it constantly, jackass. I was anxious enough without having other people remind me, too.
I would like to say that I am ecstatic, and that I’ve worn out my shoes jumping around for joy, but I’m also painfully aware that as much as I may deserve this, there were more than eighteen of us who did. When they sent out the “Please apply next year” e-mails, I discovered some fabulous writers who surprisingly hadn’t made it this year. (Including Folly Blaine. As I said in the video, I would battle a circusful of trained ninja kittens with katanas and rocket launchers to have her as a classmate, but alas.)
I know I worked for this, and I’m confident it will be the experience I need, but I’m not going to forget that part of my acceptance was luck. I don’t think anyone else (accepted or not) should forget that, either. Luck is always part of a writer’s journey. It’s the wildcard that makes this business scarier and more exciting than many others that involve keyboards and pens. I heard through the grapevine that there were over twice as many applications as usual, and that lowered everyone’s odds.
I hope the new friends I made will participate in the Write-a-Thon, so we can write “beside” each other even if we’re not in the same building. <3
